Civil Rights for the Unborn

During this presidential election year it seems like everyone has a cause or a "right" to champion. Whether it is the economy, the war on terror, or national healthcare, most people have at least one issue that really gets them motivated to see their "rights" restored. Does God have a specific issue that He is motivated to restore "right" to starting this year? I believe He does, and that issue is the rights of unborn babies.

This writing is not for the purpose of condemning those women who have had abortions in the past, because mercy is always extended from our heavenly Father to those who ask for His loving forgiveness. There are many organizations (1) that can help women who have had abortions or need help with adoption agencies. However, this article is written for the purpose of stopping any future abortions, and asking God to extend His great MERCY towards us for this tremendous sin of abortion. Tonight begins the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) which is the holiest day of the Judeo-Christian year and an appropriate time to be crying out for His MERCY.

My son Joshua and I attended a historic gathering on August 16, 2008 in Washington D.C. to fast and pray for the ending of abortion. On this day an estimated 70,000 people filled the lawn in front of the U.S. Capital building to stand in the gap for the civil rights of the unborn in our nation. They have a right to live and not to continue being slaughtered. This gathering of "The Call" took place all day long with various speakers and musicians leading the choruses of praise to our heavenly Father. Eddie James led the morning intercession and repentance for our nation's daily killing of 3,500 people (2) before they even see the light of day outside the womb. Lord have MERCY!

Forty five years ago on August 28,1963 another civil rights movement was ignited in this same place when Martin Luther King Jr. said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." On the exact 45th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech, Senator Barak Obama became the first black person to be nominated by a major political party in the running to be our nation's next president. Mr. Obama gave his acceptance speech on August 28, 2008 in Denver Colorado. It was here in Denver in 1908 where the first national political convention to accredit women as delegates took place (3) ,which is another important civil rights issue.

I recently went to see the Dr. Seuss movie called "Horton Hears a Who." The Lord impressed upon me to earnestly pray that Mr. Obama will be like the baby kangaroo in this movie who changes his mind and ends up saving the "who's" where the "who's" represent the unborn children. They are crying out for justice, but who is listening?

Sarah Palin, the current Vice Presidential candidate who is from the other major political party, also seems to be playing a role in this next civil rights movement for the unborn. Her youngest child is a Down's Syndrome baby, and her teenage daughter accidentally became pregnant out of wedlock. These are two of the main reasons that people in America get abortions. Sarah decided to have her baby knowing full well that it would have Down's Syndrome. Her young daughter also decided to have her baby amidst the trials and hardships of having a child at that young an age without being married. Mrs. Palin not only talks the pro-life talk, but she and her family are living it out for younger people to take notice of this example.

These two politicians are currently both only in their mid 40's and in many ways represent the next generation of leadership. Solomon's first test when he became king was the sanctity of life where he had to decide which woman was the real mother of a child and which one had accidentally smothered her child to death. Likewise, my generation is now having to answer the question: "when does life begin?" On the same day as this Call gathering in Washington D.C., Rick Warren was interviewing the two main presidential candidates on their religious beliefs and one of the questions asked to both was: "when does life begin?"

Father God in Jeremiah 1:5 declares, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you." The Bible calls it an abomination to kill children as the heathen did in ancient Israel, referring to it as the worship of the god of Molech (Jer. 32:35; Lev. 20). This same ancient evil spirit still exists today and is taking innocent human lives through abortion. Psalms 139:13-16 says, "You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them."

It may take many years to see the rights of the unborn justified, just like it took 45 years for Martin Luther King's dream to mature. But I believe that one day the average person will look back at 2008 and see it as a demarcation point for the rights of the unborn just like 1963 was a demarcation point for the rights of colored Americans. If the average person were to witness a surgical abortion, they would be appalled because abortion stops a beating heart, and murder is ugly.

Lou Engle said from the stage at this Call gathering that God has a dream too… a dream that one day all of the unborn will have a right to live! It will take more than just electing pro-life leadership or passing laws and winning court cases. There must be a change of heart where we respect that mankind is created in the image of God at conception.

Long live the unborn!

National Right to Life gives the following statistics about abortion in the United States:
- There have been over 48 million abortions since 1973.
- The annual number of abortions went from 744,600 in the first year of legalization, to a high of over 1.6 million in 1990. In 2003, there were 1,287,000.
- There were over 3,500 abortions per day in 2003, 146 per hour, about one every 25 seconds.
- For every 1,000 live births, there were 312 abortions in 2003.
- There were more than 148,000 second and third trimester abortions in 2003.
- In 2003, more children died from abortion than Americans died in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Korean, Vietnam and Gulf Wars combined. -
